How we install turf so it lasts
We are Adam and Ben, brothers running our own crew out of South Surrey, and turf that ripples, sinks or smells almost always comes down to a rushed base. Turf is a hardscape job wearing a soft surface, so we build it like one.
We start by stripping out the existing lawn and topsoil, usually 3 to 4 inches, and everything organic goes with it. Organic material left underneath breaks down and leaves hollows. Then we bring in crushed gravel, shape it to the grades we want so water moves off rather than pools, and compact it in lifts. A finer layer on top gets screeded and compacted again to give a hard, smooth surface, because every bump in the base shows through the turf.
A weed barrier goes over the base. Turf rolls are laid in the same direction so the blades all lean the same way, then seams are glued and stapled on a seaming tape, which is where a sloppy install gives itself away as a visible line down the lawn. We fix the perimeter to timber, bender board or the adjacent hardscape with spikes so the edges cannot lift. Finally we brush in infill, which holds the blades upright, weighs the turf down and protects the backing. Our 1-year workmanship warranty covers the installation.
Pets and kids
Turf is a good answer for dogs, mostly because it ends the mud. For pet yards we use a free-draining base and a perforated backing so urine passes straight through rather than sitting in the infill, and we recommend an infill that does not hold odour. A rinse with a hose every week or two in summer keeps things fresh, and solids get picked up the same as on grass. For play areas we can build up a shock pad under the turf beneath swings and climbers to soften falls. Turf does warm up in direct summer sun more than living grass, so if the yard is wide open with no shade, that is worth knowing before you commit.
Turf vs sod for your yard
We install both, so we have no reason to push one. Turf wins on heavy dog traffic, deep shade where grass will not fill in, small courtyards, sloped or awkward strips that are miserable to mow, rooftop and townhouse patios, and anywhere you want it to look the same in February as in July. It costs more up front and it costs nothing after.
Sod wins on large open lawns where the turf cost would be hard to justify, on yards where you want the cooling and the feel of living grass, and where owners genuinely do not mind mowing. In this climate a well-drained sod lawn does well with modest input for most of the year. If your yard is big, sunny and you like cutting grass, we will tell you to lay sod.
What it costs
Artificial turf in Greater Vancouver typically runs $15 to $25 per square foot installed, base included. Where you land depends on the turf grade, how much old material has to come out and go to the dump, how much shaping the grades need, and whether a machine can reach the area or the material has to be barrowed through a side gate. Small, fiddly areas cost more per foot than one open rectangle.
As a rough guide, a 400 sq ft back lawn typically lands around $6,000 to $10,000, and a 1,000 sq ft yard around $15,000 to $25,000. Sod installed is far cheaper per square foot up front but carries mowing, watering and fertilizer costs every year. Care
There is no mowing and no watering, but turf is not quite zero effort. Rinse it with a hose now and then, more often in a pet yard and during a dry stretch, to clear dust and keep it cool. Brush the pile against the lay of the blades a few times a year with a stiff broom or a power brush, especially on walking lines, to stand the fibres back up. Keep leaves and needles off it in autumn with a leaf blower or a plastic rake, because debris left to sit turns to organic matter and that is what lets moss and weeds get a foothold. Top up infill every few years on high-traffic areas.
