Patios

We are Adam and Ben, brothers running our own crew out of South Surrey, and a patio is the piece of hardscape people use every day, so we plan it around how you actually live outside. Where the table goes, how many chairs need to pull back without dropping off an edge, where the barbecue sits, and which corner gets afternoon sun in July.

Construction is the part you never see. We excavate to depth, remove everything organic, and build a crushed gravel base compacted in lifts rather than all at once. Then bedding sand, the pavers, edge restraint spiked around the perimeter, and polymeric sand swept and activated in the joints. We hold a fall of about two percent away from the house so water runs off instead of standing. Every patio we build carries our 1-year workmanship warranty.

Walkways and front paths

A front path is the first thing anyone touches on your property, and it is also the surface most likely to heave, because it is often the narrowest and the most poorly drained. We build walkways on the same base standard as a patio rather than dropping the pavers onto sand over dirt.

For width, we aim for at least 4 feet on a main entry so two people can walk side by side, and 3 feet on a side-yard or garden path. Curves read better than straight lines on most Lower Mainland lots, and a contrasting border course makes the path look intentional. Where a path runs beside a lawn we set the surface just below grass height so a mower can pass over the edge.

Paver driveways

A driveway carries vehicle loads, not patio chairs, so the base is deeper. Where a patio might sit on 8 to 10 inches of compacted gravel, we build driveway bases in the 10 to 14 inch range, more on soft or wet soil, and we compact in lifts the whole way up. The pavers themselves are thicker units rated for vehicular traffic, laid in a herringbone pattern because that interlock resists the twisting force of turning wheels far better than a running bond.

Permeable pavers are worth asking about. Instead of shedding rain to the street, they let water pass through open joints into an open-graded stone reservoir below. On lots with a hard-surface limit or a drainage problem at the bottom of the driveway, that can solve two issues at once. Work near the road allowance sometimes needs municipal sign-off; we check with the municipality and handle that on every driveway job.

Steps, seat walls and borders

Most yards in Surrey, Langley and White Rock have a grade change somewhere, and steps are how you make it usable. We build them with consistent rise and run so nobody catches a toe in the dark, on a compacted base of their own, using solid step units or pinned block. Seat walls do double duty: they hold a small grade, define the edge of the patio, and give you seating for a crowd without buying more furniture. Border courses in a contrasting colour frame the whole surface and give us a clean line to cut into.

What it costs

Paver work in Greater Vancouver typically runs $25 to $45 per square foot installed. Material choice, dig depth, removal of an old surface and access to the yard move you within that range.

• A 60 sq ft front walkway with a border course: roughly $1,800 to $2,700.
• A 400 sq ft back patio in concrete pavers: roughly $10,000 to $18,000.
